We are proud to announce that our Researcher Miguel Martins has served as both co-author and illustrator for Chapter 19 of the newly published Ridgway and Harrison’s Handbook of Marine Mammals, Volume 2: Oceanic Dolphins.
The chapter focuses on the two recognized species of pilot whales—the long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) and the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus). It provides an in-depth overview of their taxonomy, distinctive morphology, ecology, population genetics, and evolutionary context. In addition to synthesizing current scientific knowledge, the chapter also highlights critical gaps that remain in our understanding of these species, outlining future research priorities essential for advancing conservation and management.
