Field trips are conducted in our research vessel, Ketos, and also aboard commercial whale watching boats that are in partnership with our organisation.
The species most frequently sighted during the field season are the short beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Occasionally, we can also find the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), stripped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), Orca (Orcinus orca), minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus).
For every cetacean group found, we collect several biological, ecological and environmental data.
Everyone’s experience at AIMM is unique. The programme is tailored to your learning interests, allowing you to decide which aspect of marine fieldwork you want to explore, or even get assistance for your personal marine research projects.
Authentic Portuguese Homestay
Participants will stay with AIMM researchers and assistants, in a villa in Albufeira, Algarve, Portugal.
Participants will share three rooms, three bathrooms, living room, kitchen, office, garden, farm with a small crop of fruits and a private pool. The house has Wi-Fi and a laundry room.
The atmosphere is informal and familiar, and everyone shares the responsibility of doing household chores. It is also important to keep in mind that the team is usually constituted by members of different countries with different levels of English, so fellow participants need to be patient with each other.
