Who are we?
AIMM – Marine Environment Research Association – is a Portuguese non-profit, non-governmental organisation working since 2010 to promote scientific research, environmental education and the conservation of marine ecosystems. Based in the Algarve region, we focus on impactful national and international marine conservation initiatives.
We are currently looking for a Conservation and Environmental Policy Manager to join our team. This role focuses on supporting and leading participatory management and policy development for marine conservation, especially within the newly established Algarve Marine Protected Area – Pedra do Valado Natural Park.
Position:
- Support the coordination and implementation of marine conservation projects within the Pedra do Valado Natural Park, in collaboration with partner institutions, scientific organisations, local communities and decision-makers;
- Develop, implement and monitor marine governance and conservation strategies;
- Draft technical and scientific reports, policy briefs and decision-making support documents;
- Contribute to strategic planning and the definition of conservation priorities;
- Assist with institutional communication and stakeholder engagement activities.
Start date: 1st September 2025
Contract duration: 1-year full-time (renewable based on performance and funding)
Candidate profile:

- Fluent in European Portuguese (spoken and written) – mandatory;
- Master’s or PhD in marine sciences, conservation, environmental policy/management, environmental engineering or related fields;
- Proven experience working with communities in the context of NGOs, academic institutions or political/government bodies, preferably related to coastal areas;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, dynamic and proactive attitude;
- Proven ability to work with government and non-government entities;
- Able to work collaboratively and facilitate participatory processes;
- Proactivity, resilience and commitment to ensuring the success of the project;
- Familiarity with the local and regional context will be an advantage;
- Valid category B driving licence – mandatory;
- Availability to work from AIMM’s Field Station (Ferreiras, Albufeira – Algarve).
- Availability to travel within the country and abroad to represent AIMM;
- Availability to travel to participate in meetings, conferences or similar events that may be useful for acquiring new skills or to learn about national or international examples that can be applied in the region, and to actively participate in actions on the ground, as necessary.
