Introduction to cetaceans 

Get to know the whales and dolphins of continental Portugal

This workshop provides an introduction to the study of marine mammals, in particular to whales & dolphins.

Participants will gain general knowledge about the different species of cetaceans, particulary the ones occuring around mainland Portugal, research methodologies, relevant Laws and Codes of Conduct and the main threats facing these wonderful animals.


1st Day


Welcome session at AIMM's field station 

10:30 - 12:30 

Theoretical classes

  - Introduction to marine mammals.

  - Cetacean species identification

  - Species of mainland Portugal

12:30 - 14:00

Pause for lunch

14:00 - 18:00

Theoretical classes

   - Research methodologies for cetaceans

   - Law and Code of Conduct for dolphin watching

   - Threats to cetaceans

Preparation of the field trip 

2nd Day

09:00 - 12:00

Field trip onboard r/v Ketos

12:30 - 15:00

Pause for lunch and free time

15:00 - 17:00

Data entry and exploratory analysis

17:00 - 17:30
